MCCLOUD — November 2, 2026. The U.S. Forest Service’s McCloud River Trail guide describes a nonmotorized trail running approximately fifteen miles from the Lower Falls day-use area toward Algoma Campground.

Where the route begins

The Forest Service directs visitors southeast from McCloud on Highway 89, then to McCloud River Loop Road. The trailhead is next to a staircase at the Lower Falls overlook.

Expect different terrain

The agency rates much of the trail as easy but identifies a steeper stretch with switchbacks and stairs between Middle Falls and the overlook. Users should verify whether current trail closures, erosion or snow limit access before relying on the full distance.

A cold river with hazards

The Forest Service warns that water near the falls is very cold and fallen trees can endanger river users. Hikers should bring layers and water, respect private land downstream and avoid crossing flood-swollen channels.
